I worked at a local behavioral health nonprofit and during Mental Health Awareness Month we held two seminars “Kids in Crisis.” Loverly was the guest speaker at both. She discussed the overall topic of bullying and her book, “Be a Buddy, Not a Bully.”

One of the seminars was at the Belle Glade Elementary School, where she read her book, “Be a Buddy, Not a Bully” to the entire student body — approximately 240 children. I was amazed. I never saw 240 children sit still and listen so attentively.

After she read the book, she discussed it with the children and they were very response. Some talked about being bullied and others talked about being the bully Those that bullied said the would rather Be a Buddy, Not a Bully.

Loverly did a fantastic job working with the children and spreading the message on the issue of bulllying.

Thank you so much for coming to speak with our students at the Women’s Empowerment club today! Your story was such an inspiration to the kids. I feel like the universe sent you to my classroom today to remind me that I too can reach for dreams that I’ve brushed aside as “impossible” or “unrealistic”. You’re doing wonderful, inspiring things Ms. Sheridan! I’m ordering your book and hoping you can come back to Dreyfoos School of the Arts to inspire an even wider audience!
    Thank you,
    Valerie

I could not love you more…..You are an angel that I got to know coincidentally and you and what you do will remain in my heart a very very long time….I am so so proud of you as a woman and most of all as a St. Lucian. Lov, continue to inspire all of us….I wish you more blessings today and throughout your entire future. My girl forever!! Aim and reach….give and give some more.!!! My buddy!!

  • Lia says:

I’m from Haiti, I was invited to your book launch(U-nique), by a friend whom is from St. Lucia. I enjoyed it very much, more than I taught I would, I bought all three books, read U-nique and Tiki-tok for my 7 years old daughter the same night, I cried, I identified, I remembered, we are so much alike than we are different. I’m already half way in “A girl like me”, truthfully it’s like you were documented most of my own life, many times I had to stop reading, for my tears would not stop flowing, I got sucked in,”Americanized”, competing, feeling empty, always searching, feeling anxious and scared, but you inspired me, challenged me to reconnect with that little girl from a little island in the Caribbean. I have to go finish my book now, all the best to you in your career and search of yourself, I’m already looking forward to your next “one”. Best regards……

  • Eunice White says:

  • Claudia D says:

Here is what I know to be true, “you can achieve anything if your heart and your mind can conceive it.”

A Girl Like Me drives this theme home again and again. It doesn’t matter what dot on this globe you’re from, it doesn’t matter what you look like, your gender doesn’t matter and what others think doesn’t matter. Your circumstances do not matter. What matters is quite simple; you can achieve anything you set your mind to with some effort.

Anyone who believes they do not have the resources to pursue their dreams should read this book. Anyone who was told that they don’t belong should read this book. Anyone who has a dream and a fire burning inside them to be different and do better should read this book. If you are looking for the courage to pursue your dreams you should read this book.

What better gift is there than “hope?” This book gives hope to anyone; young, old, young at heart and in-betweens. Anyone who was told they couldn’t and they shouldn’t. This book inspires us to dream and act on those dreams. Sometimes all we need is for someone to come along and inspire us to take that leap of faith to live our best life.

Well ladies and gentlemen be inspired my friends! Be inspired! A fun inspirational book!

  • Nya says:

I received your book on Friday and completed it yesterday and I must say it had me captivated from the beginning. I applaud you for your bravery because as much as I would like to travel the world, I don’t think I would have had the guts to make the moves you made. I felt like I too was on a journey whilst reading your book.

I think it was really brave of you to journal your life story and share it with us, I learnt alot from your experiences which was also very inspiring. It takes alot to put yourself out there, because we as a people are very judgmental, and instead of being encouraging and supportive of one another, we tend to bask in each other’s downfalls.

I just wanted to tell you thank you for being different, and not the norm. Thank you for exuding the qualities of a strong woman. I appreciate you for that.

    Much love sister

  • Dalia says:

    Hi Loverly,
I came across your name while reading Shala Monroque’s blog and I am sooo happy I did! As a fellow St.Lucian woman, who struggles to find her purpose in life which I feel is to help and inspire others, especially women, you were a breath of fresh air!!! I resonated with the title of your book (A Girl like Me). I currently live in the US and I pray daily asking GOD to reveal his special purpose I was created for.

I just ordered your book and I’m very excited to read it, because I know I will be inspired by your story, which I already am just by going through your website.

Keep on doing what GOD has placed in your heart…you are an inspiration to others!

    Much love sister :)

  • Joanne says:

Inspiring and enjoyable to read this book…A Girl Like Me. I must say whilst reading i found myself on the the journey. I love travelling and have travel to some of Europe and the caribeean but your book gave me more of an appreciation to the planet we live on which gave me great motivation to also explore for my self some parts of the places you have been. Wishing you a continuous successful journeys and may Jesus bless you and you family (:

  • Cathy Walker says:

Well, well, well. Finally I got the copy in my hand and honoured to have it brought to me by you. Signed, sealed and delivered. At first I thought I would just leaf through a few pages. However once I started I couldn’t put the book down. So much of what you wrote I could identify with. Also being a Lucian living in Sweden I could totally get your struggles with the climate etc. but it truly is an amazing place once you understand it. It’s like you said the more we believe people are different the more we realise how similar we all are no matter where we come from. My wish is that more young St. Lucia women and men would dare to dream, dare to travel, dare to truly be themselves, dare to live outside the box and dare to reach for the stars. You have and just look at all the amazing possibilities awaiting you. So happy to have met a Girl Like You.

  • Keryn says:

I thoroughly enjoyed reading A Girl Like Me. Such a quick and captivating read. As a fellow island girl I found it encouraging and inspiring and ofcourse would highly recommend it to others like us. What also made it enjoyable for me was that it has good and honest insight into the mind of an ambitious woman, especially when you spoke about some of your struggles. Your story is one of courage, determination, faith and it’s full of heart and I love that. Your attitude towards life, and how you overcame odds, and did what others might think impossible, makes this a good read for anyone, anywhere, men included, who intend to do great things with their lives. I gladly added A Girl Like Me to my list of favorites!

  • Jonathan Gladding says:

Last year I started reading Loverly Sheridan’s book, A Girl Like Me. I’m not interested in self-help or personal growth books but I loved this story and came to really appreciate what a kind, brave, determined, and positive person Loverly Sheridan is. And the stories were fascinating- who would have imagined that Japanese schoolchildren and teachers wear hairnets and aprons just to eat their lunch. Lol. The book expands notions of what is possible in this world by her personal example of a little girl with limited means from a small island but with big dreams of traveling around the world from continent to continent and learning all she could about the people and cultures in those places. She achieves that dream mostly by being optimistic, determined, and goodhearted and no doubt leaves the places she visits and people she lives among a little better than before. She wrote A Girl Like Me amid challenging circumstances a long way from home but kept her vision for her book and what she wanted to do with it and it’s so good to see her realizing that vision in her book launches, signings, seminars, and school visits where she tirelessly shares her message of optimism and possibility. Hats off to her and all the people who have bought her book and showed her so much vital support this year. And thank you Loverly Sheridan for sharing your story with all of us.

  • Jasmine Peter says:

Did you know you have the power to make our world a better place? YOU… “I’m possible!” I hear you saying it and it’s true.

In this world of turmoil and strife, with chaos everywhere across our nation and around the globe, there has never been a greater hunger for simple words of encouragement. Excessive stress, lack of control, financial pressure, uncertainty about tomorrow, these are all taking their toll on our emotions, health, and morale.
However, there is hope. There is one indispensable ingredient that can transform and inspire individuals, improve lives, grow a positive attitude, build self-esteem, and enhance relationships. That ingredient is encouragement. You give that to me Loverly Sheridan

Albert Schweitzer said, “Sometimes our light goes out but is blown into flame by another human being.” There are two ways to rekindle that flame, to give the gift of encouragement, by your words and by your actions. You continue to give that to me Loverly Sheridan

Your heartfelt and positive words can make a difference in a person’s life, which could lead to a change in the community, nation, and world. Mother Teresa said, “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.” PUSH, PRESS, PRAY! My encouragement to you.

You inspire me to push on against all odds. You always inspire me and you’re a mistress at it. I Love your book “A Girl Like Me”, and I would like to share it and your thoughts with all around me – man and woman alike. Your hard work, your ambition, your integrity, your truth, your courage, your zeal to aspire, your compromise, your fearlessness, your gratitude, your consideration, your humility, your love, your care, your understanding, your determination, your voice, your respect, your intelligence, your patience, your journey, your positive energy, your accomplishments all were seen whilst reading. Just reading this book has “broaden my horizons” and has reassured me that truly it is the simple things in life that makes us MOST HAPPY!

Thanks for the opportunity to own a copy of your “amazing journey of self-discovery, while traveling the world”. I Love You LOVEE and I love, “A GIRL LIKE ME”!

  • De"va Leon says:

I started reading about Loverly from HI 5, which I always find to be very interesting & encouraging, always had something positive to say which I enjoyed because I love positive & straight up people. Then I followed her to facebook, all this time we were never web friends nor did I ever spoke to her in my life but her mom & I has been friends for awhile.
When I heard she was publishing a book I just had to have a copy. She and her mom came to NY for the book promotion and we had a very brief conversation and I told her, I could not be at the book launch due to prior engagements but I would like a copy- I got my copy signed & delivered – Thanks Loverly….
Reading A GIRL LIKE ME brought out almost all my emotions, Joy, excitement, sadness amongst others it also took me way back to my childhood and my country St Lucia. It taught me so many things (never too old to learn), made me look at certain things differently, saw the world through her eyes (what a beautiful world). I love this book because in many ways I can identify with her. I could not put this book down, it took me two days to read it and my only disappointment about A GIRL LIKE ME, is not enough pages….Got to read it twice lol….Great job Loverly.
    AWAITING THE NEXT BOOK

  • Jade says:

From the time I started to read this book I didn’t want to put it down. This book is such an inspiration. It made me believe that anything is possible because it is so relatable. I have felt a lot of the emotions that were expressed in some of the chapters and when reading it I thought “WOW”. There were even instances when I cried just reading about some of the simple joys we take for granted. It inspired me to persue my dreams and lean not on my own understanding, but look to GOD. I have taken a lot from this book but one of the things I cherish the most is turning impossible to I’M POSSIBLE!!!

  • Fern says:

    HI All

I have just finished reading “A Girl like me” written by Loverly Sheridan. This is her story of her journey to self-discovery while traveling the world. She opens up her world and shares some of her most personal experiences and t…he lessons she took from each experience…..telling her story with the hope that she can give others the strength and courage to face their fears and hardships.

I highlighted so many lessons/quotes from her book, but the one quote that most resonated with me- esp. because of my own experiences over the last three years- was the following:
“While it is good to talk to others, sometimes we are consumed with emotions that can alter our thought process and state of mind, and we can easily be influenced and manipulated by others thoughts and opinions. It’s important for us not to allow our emotions to get the best of us, and create even more chaos and division…….I’ve learned that sometimes there is no wrong or right answer. Sometimes the dots just do not connect and we have to learn to let go and be strong enough to know that we are capable of connecting the dots on our own…..I try to hear my own voice before anyone else’s.” (Loverly Sheridan from her book “A Girl Like Me”).

This was an amazing read Loverly…..I truly admire and respect you even more now..…I thank you .

  • Judelia says:

Jim Morrison said “The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are. You trade in your reality for a role. You trade in your sense for an act. You give up your ability to feel, and in exchange, put on a mask. There can’t be any large-scale revolution until there’s a personal revolution, on an individual level. It’s got to happen inside first.”

In this deeply moving, deeply cathartic, profoundly inspiring memoir, Loverly Sheridan removes her mask, a feat only achieved by someone who is habitually self reflective. She traded in her role for a reality, her act for her sense and her mask for her ability to feel. Thank you, Loverly, for this candid account of your journey which I could not put down even if I had my scheme book to upgrade and finals to study for :D :D (and with mango and fan in hand). You have started a revolution of self worth and reaching for one’s dreams. Ask for a girl like me? I am on board!
    My best to you!!

  • Terlina St. Rose Brown says:

Lovee, you are very talented. Your book finally arrived and what a refreshing read it was. It touched on so many of my emotions. It made me burst out in laughter, it made me sad, it made me cry, it made me angry, and it made me smile more often than not. I was sad when it ended leaving me wanting more. You are so very courageous and I admire that about you. I saw sooo much of myself in you it was a little scary. It is funny how we chart out our life to be a certain way that we believe will make us happy, and then when it happens, just the way it was planned, we still feel as if something is not quite complete. This is a must read for all ladies. A very intriguing book!

  • Samantha says:

Loverly, reading your book brought back so many memories… Some great, some very painful. It gave me the realization that the steps I took in life, good or bad, brought me to where I am right now. I have a wonderful husband, best friend and partner in my life, he is a great dad and I have a joy of a son. He is my world. Your book is a connection to what every woman goes through in life. Wondering their worth, their purpose in life. Thinking that the relationships they are in are the best for them because they really want them to work, despite all the signs that it’s not. I am happy that I read it and are utterly proud of you in your discovery and courage to bring out your life to us all. Thanks so much and Congrats on your accomplishments… one of many… Much love XOXOXO!!!!

  • Morgana Tilling says:

  • Denise -Saint Lucia says:

wow.. what a read!!!! I said that I would indulge in this book and savour it. Everyone kept saying that they connected with “A girl Like me” I thought it was because they shared your dream to travel the world so I thought to myself that is not exactly my dream but I have always loved the way loverly writes so I must read it. I read the first chapter and fell into the same saying… Its really not …a cliche..you really are a girl like me! hats off to you, again and again! I promised that I would do some marketing by taking this book everywhere I go while I read. Turns out it was to addictive. I read the entire book at home, Still it will be my pleasure to carry it around outside my bag. I hope it does not get dog-ears . Thank you again and again! you really are an inspiration. can’t wait for you next book!

  • Caroli Beausoleil says:

Thank you Loverly Sheridan for just being you! Ever humble and aware of your God given voice! A GIRL LIKE ME is an inspirational story that we can all relate to through life’s journey of growth and self-empowerment. You bring positivity to every lesson along your journey – seemingly good and bad at the time – teaching of how it shaped your life and your being for good, all while helping others along the way!

“To thine own self be true.” ~You helped me gain appreciation in such a regard a long time ago. You are BRAVE and so many look up to you for it!! It’s not easy to earn the support of the crowd that you’ve drawn but you have done it beautifully! You’ve EARNED IT! God has His way and I’m so proud of you just for being true to who you are!!

“I have failed at many things in life, none so hopelessly as when I was not being myself. Since then I haven’t know how to be anything else.” –A GIRL LIKE ME, Loverly Sheridan

What makes a river so restful to people is that it doesn’t have any doubt, it is sure to get where it is going, and it doesn’t want to go anywhere else. Keep striving for the best success Loverly. There is only one success, which is, to be able to spend your life in your own way and you’re doing just that.

There’s this quote from Billy Blank that I’ve always loved, ” Where I am today is where my mind put me, where I’ll be tomorrow is where my mind and will put me”. The greatest results in life are usually attained by simple means and the exercise of ordinary qualities. These may for the most part be summed in these two: common-sense and perseverance, but the difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack in will. Will is character in action.

I’m truly proud of you Lovee, you have been a great source of inspiration to me and the world at large. Keep writing and keep inspiring cause it makes a world of difference to the lives of all who reads and encourages us to live by example. Strive hard! Keep up the good work and stay special!

Great Job & God Bless YOU & YOURS!
Hugs and Kissess from your Island girl!

She IS a girl like me! This book inspired and motivated me. It reminded me of where I came from, and where I am going. It made me realise that I am not the only one in the world facing adversity. There are millions of girls just like us. I feel absolutely empowered to continue to strive, and not falter or give up on my dreams. It ignited so much in me that I had just put to rest.

  • Julie says:

I Love this book, I believe everyone should read this book: man, woman, young and old. It is definitely an eye opener, women will find it relateable and men will find it educational, when they realise how much more compromise there is in a woman’s world as opposed to theirs.

  • Len Bartlett says:

    Hello Loverly,
Though we have never met before, I feel as if I know you. It’s amazing how powerful and beautiful the spirit is. I bump into you every now and then on Facebook, as a friend suggestion. :). I browsed your page once and immediately thought what an interesting person. When you speak to people, your words are always very encouraging, thoughtful, and inspiring, and that stood out so clearly. So often we tend to notice the bad in people, and give no recognition to what’s good. For whatever reason, I felt compelled to let you know that I think there’s something very special about you. It’s amazing how someone’s name always seems to characterize him or her. I also noticed that you have a book coming out soon. I’m actually looking forward to reading it. Take good care and all the best to you.

    Hi Loverly,

You website is great!!! Very very inspiring! I am also on a very similar journey to you at the moment and always working on myself. I have been reading a lot about mindfulness, joy and the power of living in the now. I feel that you are really living your life in this way whilst continuing to work towards your life goals and dreams.

I worked as a health professional at an NGO in Bangladesh at the beginning of the year. It was a life altering experience, which has really influenced the direction I want to take my life. I am really looking into getting more involved in improving rehabilitation facilities and health awareness in developing countries.

Your website is very motivating!!!! I wish you all the best on your future endeavours.

A girl like you deserve the best. there are thousands to tell you it cannot be done, there are thousands to prophesy failure, there are thousands to point out to you, one by one, the danger that wait to assail you. But just buckle in with a bit of a grin, just take off your coat and go to it, just start to sing as you tackle the thing that, CANNOT BE DONE, and you´ll do it. good luck my dear child!
